Today, NVCA officially released its annual venture capital statistics yearbook, prepared by Thomson Reuters. This most recent edition features analysis and extensive data tables on the major trends affecting the industry.  The NVCA 2010 Yearbook contains charts on fundraising, industry resources and sizing, investment, valuations, and exits.

Followers of NVCA's quarterly data reports know that the industry downsized in 2009, driven largely by the exit of capital and firms created during the 2000 tech bubble.  This consolidation is not unexpected. The newer, smaller industry is reflected across the board in statistics for each key ecosystem metric.

Among the thousands of facts you'll find in the 2010 Yearbook:

  • VCs made 2009 investments in 46 states and DC. Which 4 states got left out in 2009? Hint: Sarah Palin, Bill Clinton, Dick Cheney, and Warren Buffett
  • VCs raised half the money in 2009 that they did in 2008
  • Industry capital under management is down to $179.4 billion from a peak of $276.7 billion
  • Corporate VC groups provided 7% of the capital invested in 2009 and participated in 13% of the rounds, both down from recent years
  • California-domiciled VCs invested in companies in 33 states
  • Portfolio company valuation guidelines (included verbatim) are based on US GAAP. The spotlight now shifts toward international valuation guidelines. An update is included about international efforts and the status of convergence

The 2010 Yearbook is available for download here.  Happy reading!
